New York Mayor Bill de Blasio stated that truck attack that took the lives of at least eight people was “an act of terror.”
On Tuesday afternoon, a 29-year-old man reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” after driving a Home Depot rental truck onto a bike path in Lower Manhattan near the World Trade Center.
New York City police officers engaged the suspect, shooting him twice before the NYPD took him into custody.
He was reportedly carrying both a paint ball and pellet gun.
“Let me be clear based on the information we have at this moment, this was an act of terror and a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians, aimed at people going about their lives, who had no idea what was about to hit them,” de Blasio said at a news briefing Tuesday evening.

“We know of eight innocent people who have lost their lives and over a dozen more injured,” the mayor added.
“We know that this action was intended to break our spirit, but we also know New Yorkers are strong, New Yorkers are resilient, and our spirit will never be moved by an act of violence and an act meant to intimidate us.”
“We have been tested before as a city very near the site of today’s tragedy and New Yorkers do not give in in the fact of these kinds of actions,” de Blasio said.
According to Fox News, the FBI is responding to the attack in collaboration with the NYPD.
After learning of the incident, President Donald Trump tweeted, “It looks like another attack by a very sick and deranged person.”
In NYC, looks like another attack by a very sick and deranged person. Law enforcement is following this closely. NOT IN THE U.S.A.!

Greg Ahl, a witness to the immediate aftermath of the attack, estimated seeing 30 crushed bicycles along the path the attacker stuck shortly after 3 p.m.
He told The Washington Post there were “parts everywhere” that “looked like they had been run over.”
Home Depot has confirmed the truck used in the attack was rented from the company. Home Depot is working with authorities.
